ADM ColorWeft™: Reimagining Denim, One Weft at a Time

Innovation · July 16, 2026

Indigo denim has one of the most recognisable identities in apparel: the classic blue face, the honest fade, the character that only wear and washing can produce. That identity is not going anywhere. But the space behind that blue face, the yarn structure that runs perpendicular to the indigo warp, has been treated as background for most of denim's history. ADM is changing that.

Today Artistic Denim Mills introduces ColorWeft™, a new platform that engineers colored weft yarns into authentic indigo denim. The indigo face is preserved. What sits behind it is redesigned.

What ColorWeft™ Does

ColorWeft™ replaces the standard undyed weft yarn used in most indigo denim with a colored, dyed yarn. The visible face of the fabric still reads as authentic indigo. The difference reveals itself over time.

As the denim wears, as it washes, as it moves through laser and ozone finishing, the colored weft begins to show through. Fade patterns become more distinctive. The reverse of the fabric carries a designed tone rather than the raw off-white of undyed cotton. Highlights and abrasion points carry a hint of the weft color. The result is denim with more depth on the surface and a designed color story on the inside, without stepping away from the indigo tradition that defines the category.

Why Colored Wefts Matter Now

Brand teams working on premium denim programs share a common frustration. Classic indigo is trusted and it sells, but it is also crowded. Everyone has it. The differentiators, at the fabric level, are often subtle: hand feel, fade behavior, wash uniformity, weight and stretch profile. ColorWeft™ adds a genuinely new axis of differentiation without asking the buyer to abandon indigo.

A capsule of dark indigo denim can now carry a burgundy or olive interior. A vintage-inspired straight leg can fade to reveal pink or sand rather than plain white. A tailored fashion bottom can show a whisper of grey or black behind the indigo surface. The design conversation moves beyond wash type and gets into weft color as its own creative decision.

The Seven-Color Palette

ColorWeft™ launches with seven weft colors: Khaki, Olive, Grey, Black, Sand, Pink, and White. Each has been selected for how it reads against indigo through the full life of the garment, from raw fabric through repeated washes to heavy vintage finishing.

The neutrals in the range, Grey, Black, Sand, and White, extend classic indigo styling with subtle character shifts. Khaki and Olive add a workwear-inspired tonal warmth. Pink introduces a softer, contemporary undertone that reads differently on lighter washes than on darker ones. The palette is designed to work across seasonal collections rather than sit inside a single capsule.

Built for Commercial Scale

ColorWeft™ is available in rigid and stretch constructions. It is engineered specifically for commercial scalability, which means brands can commit to it beyond limited-edition runs. The platform supports everything from small capsule collections through to million-yard global programs, with consistent quality and reliable lead times built into the manufacturing plan from day one.

Where ColorWeft™ Fits

ColorWeft™ is a sibling to ADM's other proprietary color platform, FDCD™ (Fiber-Dyed Color Denim). Where FDCD™ takes color into a completely new territory by dyeing at the fiber stage, ColorWeft™ stays inside the indigo tradition and enriches it from within. Together they give sourcing teams a full spectrum of ADM color innovation: authentic indigo, authentic indigo with designed undertones, and fully fiber-dyed color denim.
The Indigo Dyed Collection remains ADM's foundation for classic indigo programs. ColorWeft™ extends that same indigo dyeing capability with an additional creative layer.

Authentic Fades. Distinctive Aesthetics. Commercial Scale.

The premise of ColorWeft™ is simple and specific. Denim has always been about what happens over time. Fade, hand feel, wear pattern, personality. Colored wefts give designers and brands another way to shape that story, without giving up the honest indigo identity that makes denim what it is.
